A year in the studio
Having a studio means there is no longer a barrier to making art. When I started my practice a few years ago, I would have to set up my workshop every time I wanted to make something. I enjoyed the ritual of collecting the books and decorations from my dining table and clearing space for my pen plotter. I watched the prints spread throughout the room until the session was over and I would begin the ritual of disassembly.
The intentionality with which I had to make art grounded me. I felt the weight of my materials and tools as I physically moved them around the room, getting into position to create.
Now, my tools have permanent homes. I have an entire wall to see all of my works in progress and multiple surfaces to spread out and live within my ideas. This helps me visualize my work in brand new ways. I've made connections between pieces in my practice that span years. It's given me the space to see my practice differently.
It is truly a privilege to have this opportunity.
