Generative Prints and the idea of '1 of 1 of X'

A Patreon member shared a photo of their ruined July postcard. Initially, the creator considered replacing it since multiple copies existed. However, this incident prompted deeper reflection about what makes prints truly special or valuable.
The Balance of Production
Creating Patreon prints requires striking an equilibrium. Designs must be visually compelling while remaining simple enough that plotting doesn't consume excessive time. As the patron base expands, the time investment can become overwhelming without such constraints. Currently spending roughly one to two hours monthly on print creation, sustainability is a growing concern. The creator has developed efficient workflows for simplistic plotter graphics and maintains a backlog covering the rest of the year—which feels creatively limiting.
Rethinking the Patreon Model
The Patreon originally aimed to fund artistic expenses through consistent revenue. But this evolved into questioning what else it could accomplish. The challenge becomes coupling it more tightly to the artistic process itself, pushing creative boundaries rather than merely sustaining them financially.
Introducing "1 of 1 of X"
This concept originates from Art Blocks, a marketplace for generative NFTs. It highlights how generative art enables infinite reproduction of bespoke, one-of-a-kind pieces—"uniqueness at scale" offering glimpses into broader systems of possibility. This direction appeals to the creator for future Patreon prints: generating unique, one-of-a-kind prints for each patron.
The Patreon has been updated accordingly. As with all experiments here, this may evolve within two months. The next post will introduce the first generative print.
P.S. Two additional stamps were acquired.
